Influences And Recollections of a Musical Mind

Today I’m going to sing the praises of a Canadian band with the word Rush in their name…no, not THAT Rush! I’m talking about Frank Marino And Mahogany Rush. Their live 1978 album, titled Live (appropriately enough), was a huge inspiration to me as a budding guitarist. Frank Marino plays with such fiery passion, channeling the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, but conjuring a tone and sound all his own. No less than Zakk Wylde has gone on record numerous times proclaiming his love of Marino’s playing. Killer tracks include Dragonfly, The Answer, I’m a King Bee, The World Anthem, and smokin’ covers of Johnny B. Goode and Purple Haze. A rarity among ’70’s live albums, this one was only a single record, but it was amazing from beginning to end. Check it out if you can find it…it’s worth the search!
