Influences And Recollections of a Musical Mind

Adrian Belew has graced the recordings of David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, King Crimson, Nine Inch Nails, Tori Amos, and many others during his long and illustrious career. He has also recorded some excellent solo albums featuring his abstract and unique guitar style and clever songwriting. His second solo outing, 1983’s Twang Bar King, influenced me because a band I was in a couple of years later covered the title song, forcing me to learn to make some truly inventively obnoxious sounds on my pink Ibanez guitar! The album also featured a lovely song called The Rail Song, and a couple of truly odd tunes called Fish Head and The Ideal Woman. The final song on the album was a beautiful instrumental titled Ballet For A Blue Whale, in which Belew coaxed sounds from his guitar that a blue whale would understand perfectly…genius unleashed!
