Influences And Recollections of a Musical Mind

I admit a weakness for instrumental music (particularly featuring amazing guitarists), and “shred” guitar music is near and dear to my heart. I am a fan of all the usual suspects; Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen…but Guthrie Govan came along and just blew me away with his approach to this style with his solo album, Erotic Cakes (2006). Govan can shred with the best of them, but more than most, he seems to favor playing to serve the composition and melody more than just showing off his technique. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of jaw dropping guitar gymnastics going on, but the songs all feature melodies that you can hum along to, or even make up your own lyrics if you choose. There are a variety of styles featured, too. Among my favorites are Sevens, Fives, Wonderful Slippery Thing, Eric, and Rhode Island Shred (with Bumblefoot on guest guitar). If you are looking for some amazing music with no vocals to get in the way, do yourself a favor and check out Erotic Cakes by Guthrie Govan and prepare to be amazed!
