Arch Enemy: Doomsday Machine
Arch Enemy is a Swedish melodic death metal band that began with a Swedish male lead vocalist, then changed to a German female lead vocalist, and currently features a Canadian female lead vocalist.
All versions of the band have produced outstanding music with plenty of shredding guitar work. Their 2005 effort, Doomsday Machine, was recorded when the German Angela Gossow was their throat shredding singer.
I caught their set at Ozzfest that year, and Gossow was a force of nature, beating most of the male vocalists at their own game, with savage guttural ferocity and intensity in her vocals, and stage presence to spare.
I love the combination of the no compromise style of singing paired with the ultra melodic soloing style of Michael and Christopher Amott’s guitar work.
The songs Nemesis, My Apocalypse, I Am Legend/Out For Blood, Mechanic God Creation, Slaves Of Yesterday, and Taking Back My Soul are all prime examples of Arch Enemy’s signature sound.
Their new singer, Alissa White-Gluz, and guitarist Jeff Loomis (ex Nevermore) are making exciting new music with the band and appear ready to ride high atop the metal landscape for years to come.
