Jethro Tull: Aqualung
Jethro Tull was never one of my “go to” bands, but over time I did gain a lot of respect for their musicianship, their attention to detail, and the undeniable presence of Ian Anderson. His appearance, charisma, and intelligence won me over, and his flute playing stood out as an interesting choice for a frontman’s instrument of choice.
The only album I currently own of Jethro Tull’s is a retrospective best of collection, but I think Aqualung contains enough of my favorite songs that make it a worthy choice for this list. Locomotive Breath, Cross-Eyed Mary, Mother Goose, Hymn 43, and the vivid imagery of the title song all feature great lyrics, a nice set of dynamics between electric and acoustic playing by guitarist Martin Barre, and generally capture the progressive nature of this long running and quirky English band of modern day minstrels.
And there never was anyone in the band named Jethro Tull!
