Influences And Recollections of a Musical Mind

Amon Amarth: Jomsviking

Jomsviking (2016) by Amon Amarth is a concept album about a Viking by a Swedish melodic death metal band who look like Vikings themselves…of course I’m all in!

Not only do Amon Amarth produce epic metal music, but they come up with some pretty awesome song titles, too. Jomsviking is no exception, with songs like One Thousand Burning Arrows, First Kill, On A Sea Of Blood, One Against All, and A Dream That Cannot Be (featuring co-lead vocals by Doro Pesch, a certified metal queen).

Jomsviking also includes one of the greatest metal drinking songs ever conceived, the mighty Raise Your Horns. This classic Viking anthem exists as a killer video with tons of cameo appearances from a who’s who of the metal community, complete with Gregorian chants and an absolutely crushing main guitar riff that will melt your Viking beard right off your face.

I’m pretty stoked that they will be appearing with Slayer on the final pass through Indiana on Slayer’s farewell world tour (with Cannibal Corpse and Lamb Of God, too).

Opeth: Damnation

Opeth has been my favorite band for many years, and they have managed to remain in my top spot by constantly challenging themselves and allowing their sound to evolve.

Damnation (2003) was recorded simultaneously with the album Deliverance (which I reviewed earlier in this series, and which was released the previous year).

Damnation was the first Opeth album to feature only clean vocals and guitar tones, forsaking Opeth’s previous death metal status.

Damnation is full of lush and lovely melodies, a gorgeous production by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree, and some of Mikael Akerfeldt’s best songwriting.

Wilson contributed keyboards, mellotron, backing vocals, and engineered, mixed, and mastered the recording as well.

Opeth have shifted to this progressive rock style more and more in recent years, and if you don’t like the harsher vocals of their more extreme work, Damnation is a fine introduction to this incredible band.

Songs like Windowpane, In My Time Of Need, To Rid The Disease, Closure, and Death Whispered a Lullaby are flawless works of sonic art.

Opeth is also a band that delivers an iconic live show. I may be biased, but I’m not wrong!

OPETH – WATERSHED

Opeth released Watershed in 2008, and it was their final album to feature any proper death metal growls from lead singer/lead guitarist/primary songwriter Mikael Akerfeldt.

Being Opeth, it also featured lots of his soothing melodic clean vocals and a myriad of musical influences crossing multiple subgenres of metal and progressive rock.

Watershed was the first appearance of current lead guitarist Fredrik Akesson and drummer Martin Axenrot. Both of these amazing musicians immediately fit in with the trademark Opeth sound, but ultimately have helped shape the path the band has traveled in the intervening years.

This constant evolution of styles is one of the many facets of Opeth that I love.

They are fearless in their quest for expression in music and aren’t afraid to alienate some fans who are unwilling to accept these changes.

Their songs are epic in length and scope, and meticulously crafted.

Watershed only contains 7 songs, but they are full of awe-inspiring work.

The song Burden may be my favorite song ever from one of my favorite bands of all time.
